Changing Seasons: Autumn & Winter Tips for Kiwi Homes – And Your Finances
As daylight hours shorten and the weather starts to cool, the shift from Summer to Autumn in New Zealand signals more than just a change in temperature. It’s the season for pulling out the wet weather gear, lighting the fire, and getting things sorted before Winter truly sets in.
For many Kiwis, this time of year is about nesting, preparing the home, and thinking ahead. Whether you’re in the Far North or down in Southland, here are a few ways to make the most of autumn and winter around the house—and a reminder to give your finances a seasonal check-up too.
Autumn & Winter Prep for Your NZ Home
1. Check the Heat Sources:
With colder nights already creeping in, it’s a good time to service your heat pump, clean the fireplace, and stock up on firewood or gas. Energy efficiency matters, especially with power prices rising—so make sure your home is retaining heat with proper insulation and draught stoppers.
2. Gutters, Roofs, and Drains:
Heavy rain and wind are common across the country in the cooler months. Clear out leaves from your gutters and check your roof for loose tiles or leaks. It’s also wise to check external drains—especially if you’re in a flood-prone area.
3. Garden Tidy-Up:
Trim back overgrown trees and shrubs before storms hit, and prep your veggie patch with hardy winter crops like kale, silverbeet, broccoli, and garlic. Adding mulch now protects your soil and helps retain moisture.
4. Embrace Indoor Comfort:
As the evenings draw in, make your home a place you enjoy being in. Swap out summer linen for thicker bedding, add extra lighting or candles, and create cozy nooks for reading, relaxing, or watching the footy.
5. Reorganise for the Season:
It’s a great time to declutter, store summer gear, and organise wardrobes. Got kids? Pack away the togs and bring out the winter school uniforms and sports kits. Consider donating anything you haven’t used in a year.
6. Check Smoke Alarms:
We see the reminders every year when Daylight Savings starts and ends that it is a great time to check your smoke alarms. As we hunker down for winter and use fires, heaters and cook inside more, it is important to check these life saving devices. They make sure you and your family are warned if a fire does break out in the middle of the night.
Time for a Financial & Insurance Review?
While you're getting your home sorted, it's also a great time to review your financial situation and insurance cover. Autumn naturally encourages reflection—and with the end of the financial year just behind us, it’s the perfect moment to check in.
Has anything changed for you recently? A new job, a growing family, or buying a home? Any of these can affect the kind of cover you need, and whether your current insurance still works for your goals.
